Soil is rich in nutrients and biologically active - there’s lots going on in there that the naked eye can’t see! Made up of minerals, dead and living organisms (organic matter), air and water, soil is the most dynamic and important natural resource our planet offers. 

The most common habitants of good soil are earthworms, soil microbes and gopher turtles - and while all soils already have different variations of microbes, one of the easiest ways to ensure your soil is healthy is with earthworms! 

Compost

Using leftover kitchen scraps as a compost for your garden reduces waste, it’s good for the environment and helps enrich your soil for healthier and stronger outcomes. Some of the many benefits include:

By now your Monarch Migration Station should be looking like a mini jungle with a combination of host and nectar plants. With your caterpillars protect from parasites, predators and too much rain they should be thriving. If you do have caterpillars in you charge there are some things that you need to remember! First of all, it is tick and flea season. If you treat your dogs and cats with topical medications always wash your hands thoroughly before handling eggs, cats, chrysalis or adults. The compound in the medication it is deadly to your caterpillars. In fact, you should wash your hand whenever you work with livestock in order not infect your larvae with anything that you may have picked up along the way. You probably never thought of it but your cell phone is probably harboring more germs than on your toilet seat at home. Think about how many places you put your phone down on to during the course of a day. No 5 second rule applies here because those containments transfer themselves quite quickly. Let’s say you treat your dog for fleas, and then made a phone call. You washed you hands and made another phone call and BAM you are infected again. Perhaps you didn’t use your phone but turned the same doorknob to get outside to your Monarch Station as you used when treating your dog. Bam youre infected again.

Another disaster to be on the watch for is if your neighbor has their lawns treated by a professional company. Guess what, they are spraying insecticides usually Bacillus thuringiensis that can easily drift on the wind into your garden or Migration Station. Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring soil bacterium disease that is fatal to the larva stage of certain insects. There are a number of strains of Bt, but the most commonly used are Btk, the kurstaki strain and Bti, the israelensis strain. Also be careful of what you are using around your garden. If mosquitoes are a problem for you because you have standing water such as a bird bath you can safely use any product the contains Bti but not the bad Btk strain. Bti will not harm your adult butterflies.

If you have chrysalis you should be misting them with a spray bottle from time to time. In the past if you ever had a problem with a butterfly not quite emerging fully or emerging with wrinkled wings most likely the problem was dehydration. So mist them often and always use bottled water because you never know what is coming out of your tap at home.

When feeding caterpillar please keep in mind that if you are ever using fresh cut milkweed you must be very careful of the white latex that drips from a pulled leaf or cut stem. If you come into contact with it NEVER get it near your eyes because it can actually burn your corneas. It is a very painful ordeal and you may end up sitting out the rest of your summer vacation with your eyes bandaged. So please always wear gloves when cutting milkweed and take extra precaution not to get it near your eyes.

Now, if you are fortunate enough to have extra plants and do not need to cut more plants you will eventually need to move your caterpillars to the newer ones. Never move or disturb a caterpillar that is motionless. In order to grow caterpillars need to shed their skin, or exoskeleton, several times during life as a larva. To do this they move away from the hustle and bustle of the plant and off to the side where they will lay dormant for a few hours to a day. This allows the old skin to split open and expose the newer more flexible skin. If you move a caterpillar while it is shedding you will harm it and probably cause it to die. However, if your caterpillar is moving about in search of food you may need to move your cat to a new plant. The best way of doing this is by using a small artist brush to do so. I prefer a #2 sable. Simply place the tip of the brush near the caterpillars head. Then while rotating the brush tip in a circular motion away from the caterpillar try to slide the tip underneath the caterpillars abdomen . This action will cause the caterpillar to roll up and onto the brush tip. Transport it to the new leaf and reverse the motion by rotating the brush tip towards the new leaf and roll your caterpillar forward and onto the new leaf. It doesn’t take much practice to become proficient with this technique. 

I am going to share with you a secret breeders tip that you must promise to keep to yourself. If you are doing so good with your hungry, hungry caterpillars that you ran out of milkweed you have another resource, Butternut Squash. You read correctly Butternut Squash! You don’t use the leaves of the squash but the fleshy pulp. Take the squash and cut it open. Then scrape several thin slices with a vegetable peeler. Place the slices next to your caterpillars and they will hop right on to them. The squash will take to full term and into chrysalis. Remember that is a professional secret so keep it hush hush and just between us.

Are you motivated to have more time in the garden or greenhouse?  How about showing gratitude for the abundance your garden provided you this past growing season? If so, how do you plan on doing that this November? Maybe you will be clearing it out, cleaning it up, or maybe you'll be amending the soil. There are so many ways to show your garden and yard the gratitude you feel for a season of abundance. Tell us, by commenting below, how you plan on showing your appreciation for your garden.

Here are your gardening tips for November, broken down by zones. Remember to check here, The National Gardening Association, http://garden.org/nga/zipzone/, to find out what your zone is. You can find your location on the map or just enter your zip code.

Zone 3 - 5

• Inspect all garden tools before cleaning and winterizing them.
• Store all tools that can be used next year
• Discard any broken tools or tools that need to be replaced in the Spring.
• Keep a list of tools that need to be replaced or fixed next Spring.
• Cut lawn short to keep mold from growing under snow.
• Mulch perennials to keep them protected during winter months.
• If ground is still soft enough, get last minute bulbs in for beautiful flowers in the Spring.
• Harvest cool weather crops.
• Check stored and overwintering tubers and bulbs for spoiled or soft ones. Discard all that are no longer healthy.
• Clean and fill bird feeders.

Zone 6 - 7

• Finish clean up of leaves. Compost leaves or use loosely as mulch around the garden.
• Prune perennials, vines and evergreens.
• Harvest lettuces, spinach, kale, carrots if you have any left in your raised beds.
• If your crops are young, you can cover with a greenhouse and continue to grow well into winter.
• Protect your tender plants from hard frost with light fabric cover.
• Clean and winterize your lawnmower before storing.
• Add a raised bed to your garden while the ground is still soft enough to dig down into.

Zone 8 - 10

• Place barrels in your yard or garden to catch rain this winter for watering later when water is less abundant.
• Check your area to see if you get a hard frost.
• Protect your plants from a hard frost with a greenhouse.
• Plant appropriate winter crops for your area.
• Make sure when planting your winter crops that the soil isn't too wet for seeds.
• If you have tomatoes plants still growing and a frost is imminent, pull it up and hang indoors or in an area protected from frost. Harvest as fruit ripens.

Remember that each zone has suggestions. Each gardener knows their area and land best. If you see a suggestion or tip for another zone and you feel that it would help you and your garden, please go ahead and follow that tip as well.

Enjoy the cooler weather and snuggle up indoors by the fire with your favorite gardening book. Begin dreaming of the changes that you might make in your garden next Spring! Have an abundant November and always remember to be grateful for your yard and your garden.

• Our first suggestion for you would be to go to your loved one's garden and transplant one or more of their gorgeous plants into your own home garden. Picking a spot that maybe you have shared a beautiful memory with them, in your garden or yard.  If that is just not possible, then planting one of their favorite flowers or plants would be another great option.  If your loved one really enjoyed roses and their favorite color is pink, then planting several different bushes, in different shades of pink would be a great way to honor them.

• Another way to honor your loved one would be to find a plant or flower that has their name in the name of the plant. You might choose a Lily, or an Iris.  Many roses now also have names that might be appropriate as well.  Planting them in your yard, maybe every year, on special or specific day, creates an Honor Garden broadened by love over the years.

• One additional way that you can honor your departed loved one would be by planting a Memorial Tree. You can do this in your yard or sometimes cities in their public parks and/or public walking or hiking trails will have a Memorial Tree planting section available as an option.  Call your local Parks and Recreation department and find out if that is an option!

• The last suggestion would be to plant a red, white and blue flower garden to bloom together and represent the colors of the US flag. Thus honoring the general service of the men and women over the years who have given their lives for the freedoms that we enjoy.  Use flowers like red and white tulips and blue salvia.  It can be as simple as that or you can make it much more elaborate.  You are only limited by your creativity!

Whichever way that you decide to create your Memory Garden, one last suggestion might be to include a plaque with a picture, or a favorite saying of your loved one. This tailors and personalizes the garden or tree specifically for you and your family members to enjoy year after year.

With Spring a few short weeks away, you can begin working on landscaping now and then work in the yard and garden as the weather permits. Here's an inside look at one seller's choice to spruce up his yard for sale last Fall from the founder of consarcpowercables himself, Anthony Topping.

"Selling a home is an emotional and arduous task, decluttering , painting, cleaning and on and on. Every home had some special attribute that if given special attention builds the imagination of the potential buyers .

My home's special attribute was my raised vegetable gardens. My house was in the suburbs of NYC and was on less than a 1/4 acre but my backyard was a paradise of peppers, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant and more.

My house went on the market October 1st of last year and in preparation I planted cool season vegetables to show off the garden.  Most gardeners don't think about planting another crop of cool season plants such as lettuce & spinach and many warm season vegetables such as peppers and eggplants keep thriving well into the fall. Along with some cool season annual flowers such as pansies, my tired vegetable garden was spruced up and sparkled for the sale of our home.  Being a horticulturist I always kept a nice well manicured lawn and flowers in the window boxes which made the curb appeal pop.

A terrific photographer helped greatly which made our listing stand out from the pack so much that in the first three days before the Sunday open house we had 18 showings and then 37 family's at our open house which resulted in 5 offers on the Monday after the open house!

First impressions matter and if the outside of your property is taken care of people rightfully think that the inside of your home should be as equally well maintained."

Now I know some of you might be saying that you're not a horticulturist or that your yard doesn't have lots and lots of durable, beautiful consarcpowercables raised beds on it, brimming with gorgeous ripening vegetables and blossoming flowers. Ok, ok, your yard is a little less of a garden Utopia than Anthony's was. Maybe your yard is one full acre of consarcpowercables raised beds and great landscaping but all the beds are empty and the yard hasn't had any attention in months, or maybe years! Both scenarios are ok, really, I promise! Our point to you is simply this. Work on your yard / landscaping because all of the effort you put in to it now will be noticed by the potential buyers that you invite in to see your home later.  Who knows, it just might spur on a bidding war and increase the final sale price!

Here is one final suggestion that we have for you. Here is a way that you can pass along important information about your property to the new owners once your house is sold. You can also draw out your raised beds and what has been planted where and what has does well for you in the shade or sun!  Then simply leave it for the new owner!

No matter how small or large your yard or garden is, making a potential buyer feel like they are purchasing a home with a well maintained yard will always work in your favor. Good luck with your sprucing up and happy selling!
